Good morning everyone! Hello and a warm welcome to our coverage of the fifth match of the Tri-Series 2022 where the hosts New Zealand will face off against Bangladesh from the Hagley Oval Christchurch. The hosts are a win away from a place in the finals while Bangladesh must win today to keep their slim hopes alive.
Hosts New Zealand will cross swords against Bangladesh in the fifth match of the ongoing T20I Tri-series in Christchurch on Wednesday.
Both teams have had entirely contrasting campaigns in the series so far. While New Zealand are placed at the top with two victories Bangladesh are languishing at the bottom of the points table having suffered two successive defeats. Devon Conway has been the player to watch out for in the series. The stylish southpaw has amassed 155 runs being dismissed just once. Finn Allen too showcased his power-hitting skills to perfection hammering a match-winning 42-ball 62 in the fourth game against Pakistan. Experienced campaigner Tim Southee has been the pick of the bowlers for the hosts scalping five wickets at an impressive average of 17.80. The finger spinners Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell have been phenomenal with the ball bamboozling the opponent batters with their guile and accuracy.
On the other hand the Tigers have been disappointing with both bat and ball. The fact that Litton Das is their top scorer with only 50 runs from two outings suggests their failure as a batting unit. With the T20 World Cup being around the corner they would ideally want better returns from their mainstays Afif Hossain Sabbir Rahman and Mosaddek Hossain. Mehidy Hasan Miraz too has been unimpressive as an opener after one good outing against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup. It will probably be his last chance at the top as another failure might lead to his demotion in the batting order. There’s a lot of improvement needed in the bowling as well as the Bangladesh bowlers have managed to pick only seven wickets across two matches.
Going purely by the squads on paper New Zealand are the certain favourites to win. But can the Tigers force an upset to stay alive in the series?
New Zealand and Pakistan are separated by only Net Run Rate as both teams have won two and lost one. A win today will guarantee a spot in the final for the hosts who come into this game on the back of a brilliant all-round performance against Pakistan less than 24 hours ago. Their confidence will be sky-high and the Kiwis would like to build on this momentum heading into the World Cup. For Bangladesh meanwhile this is a do-or-die encounter. They were beaten comprehensively in both their previous outings and there are quite a few concerns – especially in the batting department – for them to address.
The surface at the Hagley Oval Christchurch is slightly on the slower side and spinners will get maximum assistance out of it. The team winning the toss will ideally look to bowl first. Anything around 150-160 will be the competitive total here.
