Quite a few of you may be known of the fact that the distance of sixers in cricket is measured with the help of the Hawkeye System. Let’s understand how this Hawkeye system measures the sixers’ distance in cricket.
Two types of information are required for the Hawkeye System to calculate the six’s distance hit by a batsman. One is the trajectory 3D image of the ball and the second is its speed.
As soon as the ball gets hit by the bat, six high-speed cameras mounted in the stadium combine their data to produce the ball trajectory or a 3D image of the path of the ball traveling at an angle.
Hawkeye system now does its calculations on the 3D image of the ball trajectory and the initial velocity of the ball. As soon as the ball touches the out-of-boundary surface, the distance of that six appears on the screen.
A lot of questions keep rising about the accuracy of this system. And this is the reason why a RADAR gun is also used alongside the Hawkeye System. RADAR gun measures the speed of the ball with the help of radio waves, and the distance of the six is then measured by putting that speed into a physics formula.
